More than 90% of every dollar spent by Fairewinds Energy Education is put directly into our program work. We kicked off 2015 with an early winter trip to the UK, where Arnie spoke at the House of Commons on the commemoration of the triple meltdowns of Japan’s Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power reactors. He also gave a presentation to local Cumbria organizations concerned about the government’s sponsorship of two new nukes in their area, and spoke to environmental groups who wanted to know more about radioactive releases, sampling, and accurate testing. During the late spring, Arnie, Maggie, and members of the Fairewinds Crew were invited to attend and present at the Uranium Symposium in Quebec City, where Indigenous groups from around the world spoke about the unmonitored uranium mining that was spreading so much radioactivity that local water is not drinkable, food is contaminated, and women are having unexpected miscarriages and if they go full-term, many of their children are born with strange birth defects. Arnie gave the keynote presentation as well as two other presentations.
The Fairewinds Crew began the fall of 2015 with a group of four top-notch research interns from the University of Vermont Rubenstein School of Natural Resources who researched the total life cost and construction analysis of nuclear power versus renewable technologies to determine which is the quickest and most cost-effective method to reduce CO2 emissions.
Arnie and Maggie finished out the 2015 year with a series of presentations in California where they spoke at multiple universities and outreach programs about the Fukushima Daiichi disaster and ongoing risk of continued operation of the Diablo Canyon atomic power reactor. Thanks to the amazing and dedicated film work of EON, The Ecological Options Network, Fairewinds was able to share Video presentations and Podcasts of the presentations with our viewers and members beginning in the Spring of 2016.
